Lessons have a Listen bar just under the progress bar. It reads the lesson aloud using the voices already built into your browser and device, and highlights the sentence and word being read.
To use it
- Switch Listen on. It is off until you turn it on.
- Press Play. Use Pause, Stop, and the previous and next paragraph buttons.
- Or tap any paragraph in the lesson to start reading from there.
- Press the sliders button to choose a voice, a speed (0.75x to 1.5x) and a volume.
Your Listen choices are remembered in that browser.
If it does not work
- "Read aloud isn't available in this browser." Use a recent Chrome, Edge or Safari.
- Check your device volume and that it is not muted. On a phone, check the silent switch.
- "Your browser blocked the audio": press Play again. Browsers often need a tap first.
- "Speech did not start" or "ran into a problem": open the settings and pick a different voice.
- Voices that say "(online)" need a connection and may behave differently when paused.
- Try a different browser, or reload the page.
- Voices depend on your device. If the list is short or the voice sounds robotic, that comes from your device, not from the lesson.
Still no luck? Use the Contact page and tell us the browser and device.
