What it is: the ASME safety standard for hooks used on lifting equipment. Publisher: ASME. Where to get it: search for B30.10 at asme.org; it is a purchased, copyrighted standard. I could not open a product page to confirm the current edition, so check the current edition there. Checked September 19, 2026.
Proof that the exam refers to it
The Core exam outline in the certifying body's Mobile Crane Operator Candidate Handbook, revision 1/25 (PDF) says candidates should know current federal regulations and industry standards, "including but not limited to" ASME B30.5, ASME B30.10, OSHA 1910.180 and OSHA 1926 Subpart CC (Domain 3). Note that B30.10 is named in the outline and is not in the handbook's Reference List.
What to focus on
Hook inspection and removal from service, latches, and the use of hook blocks and overhaul balls, which the outline also mentions.
This article describes the document in our own words. It does not reproduce the standard or book. Buy or borrow the current edition from the publisher to read it.
