Everyone takes Core. On top of that you pick the specialty exam for the crane you run. There are four mobile crane specialties.
TLL — Telescopic boom, swing cab
Larger hydraulic truck cranes and all-terrain cranes, where the cab rotates with the boom. If you are sitting in a cab that swings with the load, this is usually yours.
TSS — Telescopic boom, fixed cab
Boom trucks, industrial cranes and carry-deck cranes, where the operator's station does not rotate with the boom.
LBC — Lattice boom crawler
Crawler-mounted lattice boom cranes.
Which ones we cover
Our courses currently prepare you for Core, swing cab and fixed cab. See the course list for what is available today. You can certify on more than one specialty, and adding one later does not mean retaking Core while your Core is current.
Still not sure?
Ask your employer which specialty your work falls under — they will know what is on site. If you are between jobs or changing crane types, get in touch and we will talk it through.
Checked September 2026. Fees and requirements are set by the certifying organization and can change — confirm the current ones with them before you apply.
